Summer Assignment #3

This book has many hooks but maybe the most intriguing is the one you see first. "HERE IS A SMALL FACT, You are going to die." (Zusak 3) This is the best hook I believe because it is threatening for a reader. You would think a threat would turn a reader away but it's only a book so this makes you want to read more and find out information. With this kind of beginning this just makes the reader wondering more just like a cliff hanger. "Please, trust me. I most definitely can be cheerful. I can be amiable. Agreeable. Affable. And that's only the A's. Just don't ask me to be nice. Nice has nothing to do with me." (Zusak 3) This text is very intriguing because because it is describing the narrator named Death. Now with the name when you look back at the hook it gives you a idea of how the book will be structured. This text is dark and deceiving because the narrator is trying to make himself seem like a good person and nice but he says, "Just don't ask me to be nice. Nice has nothing to do with me." This hook also has words that are hard to understand even with context clues so it makes the reader more interested.
